Description
The Baxter Theatre Centre, and The Company, presents Scenes from an Execution.
Written by Howard Barker
Directed by Clare Stopford
Starring Jennifer Steyn and others
After her stupendous performances in A Doll’s House and The Inconvenience of Wings, Jennifer Steyn returns to the Baxter stage to star as the remarkable anti-heroine, Galactia in Howard Barker’s Scenes from an Execution. Galactia, an impossibly transgressive artist, is commissioned by the Venetian republic to create a painting celebrating the triumph of Venice at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. What emerges in her uncompromising pursuit of truth, is the ugliness of slaughter.
Galactia herself is brilliant, vain, arrogant and politically naive. Will this most transgressive artist be co-opted by the state? This study of the relationship between the artist and the state is known to be British playwright Howard Barker’s most accessible and commercial play. It was first seen in South Africa at the Market Theatre in 1994 where it garnered multiple awards including the best director for Clare Stopford (Blue Orange, Black Dog/ Inj`emnyama).

Description
The Baxter Theatre Centre presents, the Market Theatre Production of SUDDENLY THE STORM. Written by Paul SlabolepszyDirected by Bobby HeaneyLighting Design: Wesley FranceSet Design: Greg KingCast: Paul Slabolepszy, Charmaine Weir-Smith, Renate Stuurman Two of South Africa's leading theatre stalwarts, playwright and actor Paul Slabolepszy and director Bobby Heaney, once again team up to create a distinctly South African experience in Slabolepszy’s brand new hit play Suddenly the Storm. Their combined experience and proven track-record bring together the perfect storm of talent with powerful acting, inspired writing and incisive directing. On the outer reaches of the Far East Rand, at the home of an ageing ex-cop Dwayne (played by Slabolepszy) and his much younger wife Shanell (Charmaine Weir-Smith), a storm is brooding. What starts out as a smouldering dark comedy, suddenly turns into a roller-coaster ride of startling revelations ... of rage and recrimination ... of intrigue and suspense ... before the storm finally breaks. Enter Namhla Gumede (played by Renate Stuurman), born on June 16 1976 and seeking answers to questions that have remained buried for 40 long years... A whirlwind of mixed emotions - greed, love, loss and healing, Suddenly the Storm touches on topics that make this country so rich and rewarding for those who can brave its storms.

Description
Following its unprecedented, sold-out success last year, The Fall - a vital production about the experiences of seven UCT graduates during the #RhodesMustFall and subsequent student movements - returns to the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio during youth month from 8 to 24 June.
The media and audiences raved about the production. Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela wrote, "With all the images of violence in the media, it can be easy to lose sight of what sustains the journey that began with Rhodes. The Fall takes back the narrative and invites the audience to look beyond the headlines and to see the real human stories. It is a powerfully acted play, a profoundly complex and moving portrait of students’ struggle to free themselves from the burden of the historical legacy they have inherited."
The Fall is a frank collaborative piece of workshop theatre devised by the cast based on their personal journeys during the 2015 demonstrations. Given the recent climate at tertiary institutions throughout South Africa, this production could not be more relevant, topical and perfectly programmed.

Description
RAW SILK is an edgy, intense true to life dance/drama with original songs, a compelling script and outstanding choreography. It will take you on a journey to the heart from the moment the curtain rises, and will remain there long after it falls.
Where day is night and night is day, RAW SILK explores the dark and shadowy underworld of South Africa's street children growing up in a harsh and unforgiving neighbourhood that seemingly cocoons them. This sensitive and thought-provoking production unveils the street children as "silkworms" that hold the most beautiful and precious threads of... RAW SILK
An extremely multi-talented and dynamic cast of 30+ performers, whose unbridled passion, electrifying stage presence and sheer raw talent left audiences speechless with the company's phenomenal production run of Unchained at the Baxter in April 2016.
The Director, Choreographer, Producer and Scriptwriter, Glenda Jones, progressed from humble beginnings to become one of South Africa's most acclaimed choreographers and theatre makers. For the past 17 years she has dedicated her life to transforming the young lives of others through both dance and drama. Her productions are renowned for their ability to engage and sustain an audience from the moment they sit down, and she is confident that RAW SILK will take you on a journey that will be hard to forget.
"Afrika Ablaze is a living example of the power and therapy of dance." Cape Argus
"Agile bodies, bold choreography, unbridled passion and a taste of sheer talent" Argus Tonight

Description
It’s 1959; Hawaii had just been recognised as a US state, the LA Dodgers won the World Series, Frank Sinatra won his first Grammy and Rydell High School’s senior class is in top form. The too-cool-for- school "Burger Palace Boys" are stealing hub-caps and acting tough while their gum-chewing, Fabian-loving "Pink Ladies" are looking hot in bobby socks and pedal pushers.
The 1950s high school dream is about to explode in this rollicking musical that is both an homage to the idealism of the fifties and a satire of high schoolers’ age-old desire to be rebellious, provocative and anything but ordinary. At the heart of the story is the romance between hot-rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski. They had a secret romance in summer, but now back in the context of school, peer-pressure and cliques make their love a little bit more complicated. Can Danny maintain his cool dude status and still get sweet Sandy to be his girl?

Description
The Shakespeare Schools Festival hails from the United Kingdom as an additional education program aimed at improving language and social skills through the performing arts. SSF Southern Africa is Educape's flagship project, piloted in 2010 by Kseniya Filinova-Bruton with the objective of revealing the link between the arts and education. Each year the festival encourages schools to perform abridged '30 min' versions of Shakespearean plays in local professional theatres. The festival is non-competitive, providing a platform of equal opportunity where there are no boundaries to participation.

Description
This production is part of the Cradle of Creativity, the 19th ASSITEJ World Congress A ManoEl Patio Teatro Spain A Mano (By Hand) is a tender and delicate performance, a theatrical diamond that is a tribute to arts and artisans.
It is the story of a very small but very special hero with a great desire to escape from his pottery shop window and those who live there with him. Told with beautifully crafted clay characters and remarkable artistry, A Mano is a touching and life-affirming story about love, small failures, a potter's wheel and four hands at play.
El Patio Teatro build, model, write, direct and play. Together, they create moving, reflective and beautifully original performances inspired by stories from everyday life and by the lives of objects around them.

Description
This production is part of  Cradle of Creativity, the 19th ASSITEJ World Congress  AnziehsachenTheaterhaus Ensemble Germany Anziehsachen (Clothes) is designed for small children's first contact with theatre. A man and a woman, an old record player, a washing line and a large bag filled with wonderful things is all that is needed for the fun to begin. All sorts of exciting things happen. Two very different people try to fit together. They play, they sing and dance and they test their limits. With all the clothes they have they try the possibilities of transformation.  With live songs from Henry Purcell's opera "The Fairy Queen" this production does not only make children dream, but adults too!
